Work Groups in this project aim to deepen students’ understanding of maths by using
strategies for oracy to develop students’ reasoning skills and to support them in
making connections with mathematical structure.

Central to the Work Group is establishing a community of practice, aiming to answer
the research question: How can Oracy deepen students’ mathematical reasoning? This
Work Group will consider pedagogical strategies and the impact that the specific
pedagogy of Oracy can have on students’ mathematical thinking and securing
understanding.

What is involved?

Local Work Group design will follow a
workshop – school-based work cycle,
consisting of several workshops followed
in each case by specific school-based
work.
Collaborative planning and lesson study
are encouraged, all participants focus on
developing mathematical oracy across the
curriculum and work collaboratively to
explore this in their schools. Cross-phase
collaboration is encouraged wherever
possible. Participants are expected to
consider ways to develop the approaches
explored during the project with other
staff in their schools

The wider context

The Work Groups promote teaching for mastery approaches across the phases to
ensure consistency in the student experience, thereby meeting the primary and
secondary strategic goals of establishing teaching for mastery approaches and
encouraging schools in engaging with teaching for mastery support. The Work Group
will also use Influence pathway 1, to research and develop professional and school
approaches and materials that can be incorporated into the design of existing NCP
Work Groups or programmes.

Expectations of participants and their schools

Participants must be able to commit to the full academic year’s programme. This
involves a total of five online twilight workshops as well as classroom and
school-based activity. There will also be an opportunity to participate in a full day less
study experience. Participants must also be supported by their school leadership to
explore outcomes from the project with other colleagues in their school.

This Work Group consists of 5 online twilight sessions as well as a full day lesson study
workshop and intersessional school based activity.
