Learning Progression for Deeper Understanding of Geometry

Session Overview

Japanese National Curriculum Standard argues that the main objectives of geometry are to help students understand the basic idea of geometric figures and space, foster a rich sense of the geometric figures, and help students use the concept and properties of the geometric figures to make proper judgments, properly express them, and manipulate them. Learning how to think logically through the study of geometric figures, using what they have learned, fostering the mathematical way of thinking through the above process, and understanding the merit of mathematical manipulation are also important objectives of geometry.

In this PD session, the participants will discuss how essential ideas of geometry are introduced by reviewing Japan’s most commonly textbook series and to learn how Japan’s National Curriculum Standard is expected to be implemented through hands-on investigations.
