Oracy in the Early Years and KS1

Oracy is often described as the complementary skills of learning to talk and
learning through talk. The aim of this Work Group is to explore learning through
talk with a focus on sustained shared thinking.

The group will focus on the impact this can have on under-resourced learners
at an early age and is open to schools in a Sustaining Teaching for Mastery
Work Group.

Work Groups follow a workshop – school-based action research cycle. Various approaches and strategies will be discussed, incorporated into the participants’ existing plans and resources, trialled, and evaluated.

✔Students show improved language skills in mathematics, and beyond.          ✔Participants identify the approaches and strategies which will support rich mathematical talk.

The wider context

Sustained shared thinking, where ‘an adult shows genuine interest, offers
encouragement, clarifies ideas and asks open questions…extends the
children’s thinking and helps them to make connections in their learning’
(Siraj-Blatchford and Sylva, 2004). This group will explore how to provide
opportunities for sustained shared thinking within mathematics, how to take
advantage of these opportunities and the impact this has.

Expectations of participants and their schools

Schools must be able to commit to the full academic year’s programme. This
involves a total of six online workgroup sessions across the academic year, as
well as classroom and school-based activity. Participants must also be
supported by their school leadership to explore outcomes from the project
with other colleagues in their department.

Participation is free for teachers from state-funded schools. Cover expenses
will need to be funded by each school, as necessary. This Work Group is only open to schools who are currently in a Teaching for Mastery Work Group.
