Jurassic Maths Hub Spring Conference 2023 – Breakout session two 12.30pm

The second breakout session of the day contains workshops that are phase specific. Workshops in these breakout sessions focus on oracy, which is central to the work of our maths hub, and will involve examining our hub oracy statement and how this contributes to equitable classrooms.  The sessions are intended to give delegates a taster of how Oracy is developed at each age phase through various mathematical contexts. Participants will have the opportunity to explore tasks where oracy is supported and will consider how such experiences can contribute to equitable classrooms, including in their own context

Delegates are asked to choose, when booking, which of these workshops in the second session, they would like to attend:

Early Years

This practical session will enable participants to reflect on how they approached a mathematical shared experience, the aspects of oracy that were supported within that and how this support reflects the maths hub oracy statement. Video of learners will further support understanding of the statement, along with the pedagogy of sustained shared thinking, contributing to equitable early years provision.

Primary

In this session the Jurassic Maths Hub oracy statement will be explored in relation to what happens in the primary classroom. There will be an opportunity to watch a lesson video and discuss it in terms of oracy.  Participants will be able to share observations and their own thinking, with a view to leaving with some new ideas to try.

Secondary

In this session we will be considering the ways in which Oracy rich secondary maths classrooms can be developed to support learners both to talk, and through talk. This immersive session will provide participants opportunities to reflect on how they approached a mathematical shared experience, the aspects of Oracy that were supported within that and how this support reflects the Maths Hub Oracy statement.
