Supporting High Prior-Attaining Students from Disadvantaged Backgrounds Workshops

Raising awareness and considering approaches to help reduce the attainment gap between high prior-attaining students from disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers.

Free professional development workshops for teachers in schools with a high proportion of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, looking to support them to achieve high grades in GCSE Mathematics.

Course Overview

Students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, who previously achieved a high score in maths at Key Stage 2, are far less likely to attain grades 7 to 9 in GCSE Mathematics than their peers. However, if these students do attain grades 7-9, they are just as likely as other students to progress to and succeed in A level Mathematics. To address this disparity, the AMSP, in partnership with Maths Hubs, is offering one-day workshops focusing on strategies to support high-potential students.

You will examine and discuss key findings in recent research which highlight the attainment gap when it comes to students who achieve high grades in GCSE Mathematics. The focus will be on developing approaches and strategies to reduce the disparity in attainment between high-potential students from disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers.
