This project is designed to support primary (and special schools) teaching assistants in developing specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics, thus enabling them to understand, teach and support pupils in maths in the classroom.

Who can take part?
This programme is designed for teaching assistants who are supporting maths, and who would like to develop their specialist knowledge for teaching maths. It will be particularly relevant for new TAs or TAs that have not received maths-specific training.
What is involved?
This programme is designed to improve the subject knowledge and pedagogical knowledge for all practitioners supporting the learning of primary maths.
It supports primary teaching assistants who are supporting maths to develop specialist knowledge for teaching maths, and to develop distinct pedagogical decision-making, which will impact on their practice when supporting maths. It takes place over the equivalent of four days.
The programme will focus on what is effective in the learning and teaching of mathematics and will include;
- Number sense
- Place Value
- Additive Reasoning
- Multiplicative Reasoning
This Work Group will be offered online making it accessible to everyone in the hub region. Schools are encouraged to engage more than one participant, where possible, in order to maximise learning and impact.
What will you learn?
- Your pupils will positively engage with maths that challenges them
- You will identify common misconceptions and ways of addressing these to help pupils master important concepts
- You will develop an understanding of key principles and approaches associated with teaching for mastery
What is the cost?
The SKTM Primary Teaching Assistants Programme project is funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to attend for participating state schools.
Head teachers need to support engagement, ensuring participating staff are released from school duties in order to attend all elements of the programme.
