New for 2026/27
Mastering Number at Reception / KS1 will cover all the number element of the reception maths curriculum, and will now also include all the spatial reasoning/shape elements of the curriculum. It is designed to be used to teach the full maths curriculum for all five days of the week.
This programme is available to schools that haven’t engaged and those schools who have engaged previously with Mastering Number. Places are limited, early applications are encouraged.

Who can take part?
Participating schools will nominate three Lead Teachers, one from each of Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. Lead Teachers will attend three central workshops and three local workshops across the year. All teachers taking reception and KS1 classes are expected to use the materials daily for 15 minutes, but it will be these ‘Lead Teachers’ who will attend online meetings and have access to resources, which they are expected to share and use to support other teachers in their year group as appropriate.
The maths lead is encouraged to attend the national workshops with the lead teachers.
What is the cost?
- This is funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to attend for participating schools
- Resources will be provided for each school, in order for them to teach daily sessions of the Mastering Number Programme.
- Schools that haven’t previously engaged with the programme will receive rekenreks.
What this programme offers
This programme will support maths leads to understand how to embed effective practice in Reception and in Key Stage 1, to ensure all pupils have the best start in life.
Expectations
Lead Teachers will engage in all online synchronous and asynchronous professional development, including national live online sessions and Local Work Group sessions. These meetings are 1.25 hours long, there are 6 sessions held one per term.
